Writing is a very complex process for young children. It involves figuring out how to make letters, put letters together to form words, all while composing a message for a powerful purpose. Shared writing is an instructional strategy for modeling and supporting emergent writing as a keystone of a comprehensive writing program in preschool and kindergarten. In this session we will describe the key skills of early writing and examine into how shared writing activities explicitly supports each of them. We will then observe and analyze a demonstration of a shared writing activity. Participants will receive resources for implementing shared writing and linking it to other classroom activities to bring frequent, purposeful, authentic, and engaging writing into young children’s daily experience.
Note: This session pairs well with “The Power of Shared Reading” on February 26th.
