Understanding the Mathematics Found in Exploration, Investigation and Play

Mathematizing – The Art of Teaching Math to Young Children

In this three-part community of practice series, you will learn the art of teaching math to young children through play-based experiences. Mathematizing teachers create micro-math cultures in the classroom by integrating a math lens within children’s everyday experiences. These learning sessions will support your understanding and development of: exploration, investigation & play; math grammar; and mathematical-inquiry practices. You will have the chance to use new tools and practices within collaborative inquiry groups that will support your meaning making process. In addition, there will be reflective videos for the group to see great practices occurring in preschool classrooms. Join us for this great event with your peers in the field.

This is webinar 1 of 3.

Mathematizing is the process of understanding the math occurring within children's daily lives; The quality of materials dictates the quality of the mathematical thinking children will process; The exploration of materials builds the logical-mathematical skills required for understanding mathematics; The investigation of math concepts within real-world applications develops the understanding of the mathematical relationships found within structures and their function; Play is an opportunity to use math language and inquiry to communicate and express one's understanding of the world around us.
